The Washington Girls Chorus is
an organization dedicated to empowering young women by achieving
excellence in choral music. Girls ages 8-12 are brought together in
a creative and positive atmosphere which fosters personal growth,
teamwork, self-expression and confidence.
An emphasis is placed on teaching music literacy skills that allow each child to reach her maximum musical potential. The singers form a community of talented girls who are committed to a common goal: achieving the highest artistic standards in choral singing and performance.
Caroline V. Holtz is the Founder and Artistic Director of the Washington Girls Chorus. A graduate of
Interlochen Arts Academy
(Certificate in Voice), she holds a Bachelor of Music degree in Vocal Performance/Music Education from
Ithaca College, and a Master's degree in Music Education from the
University of Maryland.
Ms. Holtz is an experienced music educator, having served as a choral director and general music specialist for 15 years, and her choruses have consistently earned top honors at both local and regional choral festivals. She is currently the Choral Director and Chair of the Arts Department at Sidwell Friends Middle School in Washington, D.C.
Jennifer Haywood, Associate Director, holds both a Bachelor of Music degree in Vocal Performance/Music Education and a Master's degree in Conducting from Ithaca College. She also has a Ph.D. from the University of Toronto with a dual emphasis in Conducting and Music Education. We are pleased to welcome her to the Washington Girls Chorus.
Throughout her 20-year teaching career, Dr. Haywood has worked to endow students of all ages -- pre-kindergarten through graduate school, members of the community, and older adults -- with a global perspective of the musics of many times and places. She currently teaches Music at the Excel Academy in Washington, D.C.
She will have the unique opportunity to be involved in an all-girls choral ensemble.
She will perform in a minimum of two major concerts per year -- along with smaller performances around the D.C. metro area.
She will gain extensive knowledge of healthy vocal technique which
is appropriate for the young singer.
She will become a confident young singer who is well trained in sight-singing and music theory.
She will meet and develop lasting friendships with other young women from around the metro area who share her love of music and passion for singing.
